PICTOU COUNTY SPORTSPLEX

Pictou County Sportsplex is a 150,000ft2 Fitness and Wellness Centre located in Nova Scotia. The facility will provide ice and aquatic sports, community fitness and wellness programs, local events, business meetings and conferences. AME was responsible for the mechanical design, including the plumbing, HVAC and aquatic filtration plant design. The integrated mechanical system was designed around a central energy centre, which utilized the recovered waste heat from the pool hall and refrigeration plant. Additional heating and cooling will be provided by high-efficiency aerothermal heat pumps. A central mechanical system is able to off-set the simultaneous heating and cooling loads typical of this type of facility, allowing for a more efficient building and reduced operational costs. A full-building energy simulation predicted 65% energy cost savings compared to the MNECB baseline with a lifecycle payback of less than 4 years.
